Pensacola is a unique area. If you are interest in some of the history as well as details and information regarding the area, please continue reading
Pensacola, founded by the Spanish explorer Tristan DeLuna in 1559, became the first Spanish settlement within the borders of the continental United States. The Pensacola Settlement was abandoned because of a devastating hurricane and not re-established until 1698. Pensacola is known as “The City of Five Flags” due to the five governments that have ruled it during the first 200 years of it’s history. (Spain, Great Britain, France, CSA and the United States of America).
Pensacola has been an attractive sea port, since its founding, because of the deep water access from then Gulf of Mexico into Pensacola Bay and the mainland. Pensacola is protected by Santa Rosa Island, to the south of Pensacola Bay.
Being the site of the Pensacola Naval Air Station and home to the Navy flight demonstration team, Blue Angels, Pensacola is also know as “The Cradle of Naval Aviation”. The U.S. Government designated, in 1823, the area known as Fort Barrancas to be the Pensacola Navy Yard. At that time the Congress appropriated $6000 for the construction of the original Pensacola Light House. Today there is a museum at the Pensacola Lighthouse.
